You’ve probably seen Peru’s Rainbow Mountain all over Instagram, but what most people don’t know is that there are actually 3 different Rainbow Mountains near Cusco.
Most travelers only visit Vinicunca (Montaña de Siete Colores) on a crowded day tour.
Instead we decided to do this: Visit all 3 Rainbow Mountains independently, without a guide, using a rental car.
In this guide, we’ll show you:
- how to visit Vinicunca, Palcoyo, and Pallay Punchu on your own
- what each hike is really like
- how difficult each mountain is
- where to stay to make it all efficient
- and whether doing all 3 is actually worth it
If you’re deciding between one, two, or all 3 Rainbow Mountains, this article will help you choose.

The Three Rainbow Mountains of Peru (Overview)
Here’s a quick overview before diving into details:
| Mountain | Difficulty | Crowds | Altitude | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinicunca | Hard | Very crowded | ~5,200 m | First-time visitors |
| Palcoyo | Easy | Few people | ~4,900 m | Scenic & relaxed |
| Pallay Punchu | Moderate | Few people | ~4,800 m | Adventure seekers |
1. Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain (The Easiest & Quietest)
Palcoyo was our first stop — and it turned out to be the perfect introduction.
What it’s like
- Multiple colorful mountains instead of just one
- Wide open landscapes
- Alpacas everywhere
- Views of Apu Ausangate in the background
Hiking difficulty
- ~30–45 minutes total
- Around 100 m elevation gain
- Very manageable even if you’re still adjusting to altitude
We arrived close to sunset, which meant:
- no tour groups
- incredible light & complete silence
- lots of Alpacas making their way back home
💡 Important tip: Most tours arrive early morning and leave by 3:30 pm. Visiting later in the day gives you the place almost to yourself.
2. Pallay Punchu (The Blade Mountain)
Pallay Punchu (sometimes called Pallay Poncho) is the newest and most dramatic of the 3 Rainbow Mountains.
What makes it special
- Extremely sharp ridges (hence the nickname “the blade”)
- Wild, untouched feeling
- Sure footed and experienced hikers only
Hiking difficulty
- ~2 km loop
- ~300 m elevation gain
- Steeper and more physically demanding than Palcoyo
This mountain feels more like an adventure than a tourist attraction — especially because:
- there was no entry fee at the time
- very few visitors
- minimal signs and facilities
We learned that Pallay Punchu was only discovered in 2020 by a geology student during COVID lockdowns — which explains why it still feels so raw.
3. Vinicunca (The Famous Rainbow Mountain) + Red Valley
Vinicunca is the most famous and the most intense.
What to expect
- Massive crowds during peak hours
- Horses and ATVs available
- Vendors along the trail
- Stunning colors, especially after rain or snow
Hiking difficulty
- ~2 km one way (Checacupe route)
- ~300 m elevation gain
- Starting at ~4,600 m and reaching ~5,200 m
This was by far the hardest hike, mainly due to altitude.
Breathing becomes difficult, and even short breaks are necessary.
Red Valley (Valle Rojo)
If you still have energy, Red Valley is absolutely worth it:
- deep red landscapes
- wide-open views
- far fewer people late in the day
At sunset, once the tour groups leave, the entire area becomes incredibly peaceful.
Where to Stay: The Best Base for All 3 Rainbow Mountains
We highly recommend staying in San Pedro.
Why?
It’s perfectly located between all 3 Rainbow Mountains.
This strategy minimizes driving time and avoids exhausting early-morning departures.
Three Ways to Visit the 3 Rainbow Mountains Without a Tour
1. Rent a Car in Cusco (What We Did)
✅ Most flexibility
✅ Visit at off-peak times
⚠️ SUV recommended (rough dirt roads)
You can drive with:
- US or European driver’s license
- in practice no special permit needed for tourists as long as it has latin alphabet
2. Hire a Private Driver
✅ Comfortable
✅ No navigation stress
❌ More expensive
❌ Less flexibility
Great option if you want independence but don’t want to drive yourself.
3. Public Bus + Taxi
✅ Cheapest
❌ Time-consuming
❌ Requires patience and basic Spanish
Possible, but only recommended for experienced travelers.
Is It Worth Visiting All 3 Rainbow Mountains?
Short answer: Yes — if you have the time and energy.
- If you only want one: 👉 Vinicunca
- If you want beauty without crowds: 👉 Palcoyo
- If you want something unique and adventurous: 👉 Pallay Punchu
Doing all three gives you:
- very different landscapes
- varying difficulty levels
- a much deeper experience than a single day tour
Final Thoughts
Visiting all 3 Rainbow Mountains independently was one of the most rewarding experiences of our Peru trip.
The freedom to move at our own pace, avoid crowds, and explore remote landscapes made a huge difference.
If you’re planning a trip to Cusco and want something beyond the standard tour, this route is absolutely worth considering.
