Moreover, you share the hiking path with local miners, which adds another layer of fascination to your visit to Kawa Ijen. So make sure to bring warm clothes!
One of the prominent features of Nepal Van Java is Mount Sumbing, a part of the Dieng Volcanic Complex. While not currently active, Mount Sumbing provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. Hiking Mount Sumbing is a popular activity that caters to experienced hikers. The hike to the summit offers a moderate to hard difficulty level. In addition, adventurers can way enjoy stunning vistas of rolling hills, lush valleys, and neighboring peaks.
5. Visit Black Sand Dunes Near Yogyakarta

While there is no official entrance fee, there is a “toll road” and you will have to pay for parking. The site is easily accessible by rented scooters.
6. Hike To Fairy-Tail-Like Kapas Biru Waterfall
Another waterfall very close to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is Air Terjun Kapas Biru. Also commonly referred to as Kapas Biru Waterfall, invites nature enthusiasts to discover its serene beauty. Tucked away in the natural splendor, this waterfall looks like it’s straight from a fairy tail. The journey to Kapas Biru takes you approximately 15 minutes with a motorbike from Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
While you hike down to the waterfall for about 30 minutes, the sound of cascading water becomes a symphony, harmonizing with the vibrant hues of greenery. Once arrived, visitors can immerse themselves in the refreshing pool at the base of the waterfall, creating a perfect setting for relaxation.
Nature enthusiasts and photographers alike will find Kapas Biru a captivating subject, with its pristine waters, surrounding foliage, and the play of sunlight filtering through the trees. 7. Rivertrace To Reach Dramatic Kabut Pelangi Waterfall
Attention: The trail might be closed!
Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of East Java, the mesmerizing Air Terjun Kabut Pelangi, or Rainbow Fog Waterfall, beckons travelers to experience the enchantment of nature. Conveniently located only 15 minutes from Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
As you hike down the waterfall, you will first arrive at the washed-out riverbed and have to find your way upstream. Furthermore, multiple river crossings are inevitable and you should be careful during rainy season. Because unfortunately this area is prone to flooding and landslides. Due to the recent flood, that also destroyed the riverbed at Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, this Waterfall was officially closed when we visited (we found out on the way back home).
Once you arrive at the waterfall I promise you your jaw will drop! It is a massive waterfall, very high and powerfull. Because of the hot and humid weather it might be tempting to go for a swim in the pool right below the waterfall, however, it’s important to note that recent floods have made the pool area unsafe, with falling rocks posing high risks. For your safety, maintaining a considerable distance from the giant waterfall is imperative.
Since we were the only ones on this hike, it was definitely one of the most remarkable experiences we’ve had in Indonesia. If you are in good shape and really feel comfortable you can probably manage to do it, but make the decision on your own risk!
8. Walk Through The Ancient De Djawatan Forest
Last but not least, East Java is home to the Ancient De Djawatan Forest, which stands as a living testament to the region’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Located near Banyuwangi, the gateway to Ijen Volcano, this enchanting forest offers a serene escape from the hustle of city life.
To reach Ancient De Djawatan Forest, you can rent a motorbike in Banyuwangi and attempt the 45-minute drive. We stayed at this homestay and it was a one-stop shop: tour to Ijen volcano, homestay, delicious food, motorbike rental, 1-minute walk from the train station and super friendly owners who help with everything! I can highly recommend it.
But now back to De Djawatan Forest, which definitely deserves its place among the Best Outdoorsy Things To Do in Beautiful Java Indonesia in 2024.
Upon entering the visitors are greeted by towering ancient trees and the soothing sounds of nature. A leisurely walk unveils hidden treasures, including rare plant species and diverse wildlife.
